It seems as though I misplaced the original definition that I used. Here is, to my best recollection, the gist of it.
I searched long and hard for a word to describe what it was I wanted to talk about. I also knew that it would be a word that would carry with it a lot of meaning, not just the surface definition we like to use with so many English words.
So, I came upon “hubris”. I was everything that I was looking for and more. Plus, it sounded like a great name for a mountain (more on that later).
What I liked most about this definition was the story told about Achilles and Priam. For those not familiar with the story, or at least this version of it, Achilles displayed an unrivaled amount of hubris when it came to the body of Hector. Priam begged and pleaded, yet the arrogance of Achilles knew no bounds. After finally giving way, Achilles’ actions truly came back to haunt him in the story: It was the prediction of Hector that Achilles would die because of the way he treated Hector. Of course it was the weakling Paris that killed Achilles. As it usually is, when we fall from Hubris, its a long, hard fall.
Here is the new link. It doesn’t have the original story anymore. But its worth reading anyway:
